US and UK measures differ for volume — a UK gallon is about 20% larger than a US one, and both are listed separately above.
About converting units
Type a number and every unit in the category updates together, so you can read the one you need without picking it first.
How many centimetres are in an inch?
Exactly 2.54. The inch has been defined against the metre since 1959, so this is a definition rather than a measurement.
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply by 9/5 and add 32. So 20°C is 68°F and 100°C is 212°F. Going the other way, subtract 32 first, then multiply by 5/9.
Is a US cup the same as a UK cup?
No, and it causes a lot of ruined baking. A US cup is about 237 ml; a UK cup is 284 ml. The units here are US measures, which is what most online recipes use.
Why are there two gallons?
A UK gallon is about 20% larger than a US one — 4.546 litres against 3.785. Both are listed separately so you can pick the right one.
How many bytes are in a megabyte?
1,048,576 — that is 1024 × 1024, and it is what Windows, macOS and your phone mean when they show a file size. Storage and network companies instead use 1,000,000, the decimal megabyte. Both are in the list, with the decimal ones labelled, so you can convert either way.
Why does my 1 TB drive only show 931 GB?
Because the manufacturer sold you 1,000,000,000,000 bytes — a decimal terabyte — and your computer is dividing by 1024 three times to display it. The same bytes, counted differently, come to about 931 GiB. Nothing is missing.
How do I convert bytes to MB?
Divide by 1,048,576, which is what your computer does. A 5,000,000 byte file shows as about 4.77 MB. If you need the decimal version used on drive packaging, divide by 1,000,000 instead and the same file is 5 MB.
