About passport photos
Passport and visa photos have to meet exact rules on size, head height and where the eyes sit. This tool overlays those guides on your own photo and exports at print resolution, so you can take the picture at home and have it printed anywhere.
What size is a passport photo?
It varies by country. The US uses 2×2 inches (51×51 mm). The UK, most of Europe, India, Australia and Japan use 35×45 mm. Canada uses 50×70 mm and China uses 33×48 mm. Pick your country above and the crop adjusts automatically.
Can I take a passport photo with my phone?
Yes, and most countries accept one as long as the photo itself meets the rules. Stand about a metre from a plain light wall, face a window so the light is even and in front of you, and have someone else take the picture rather than using a selfie — arm-length shots distort your face.
What is head height and why does it matter?
Head height is the distance from the bottom of your chin to the top of your head, and every authority sets a permitted range. The US allows 25–35 mm within a 51 mm photo; the UK allows 29–34 mm within 45 mm. The oval guide shows the target — fit your head inside it and the height will be right.
What background do I need?
Plain white or off-white for most countries. It must be evenly lit with no shadow behind you, which is why standing a foot or two away from the wall helps.
Can I smile in a passport photo?
No. Nearly every authority requires a neutral expression with your mouth closed, both eyes open and looking straight at the camera. Glasses are usually allowed if there is no glare and the frames do not cover your eyes, though some countries now ask you to remove them.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The cropping happens inside this page using your browser. Your photo never leaves your device and we never see it.
How do I print passport photos cheaply?
Download the 4×6 inch sheet rather than a single photo. It repeats your picture six times for a US 2×2, or eight times for a 35×45 mm photo, with dashed lines showing where to cut. Any pharmacy or supermarket photo kiosk prints a 4×6 for around 20 cents, which is a fraction of what a studio charges for the same thing.
How many passport photos fit on a 4×6 print?
Six for a US 2×2 inch photo, arranged two across and three down. Eight for the 35×45 mm size used by the UK, Europe, India, Australia and Japan. Four for the Canadian 50×70 mm. The tool shows the count next to each sheet option.
How do I print it at the right size?
Ask for the print at actual size, not “fit to page” or “scale to fit”. Scaling changes the dimensions and the photo will be rejected. If you are printing at home, choose 100% scale and borderless, and use photo paper — plain paper is usually not accepted.
Can I get a single photo instead?
Yes. Choose “Single photo” and you get one image at the exact physical size, 300 DPI, which is what most online applications ask you to upload.
